How to Plan One Week on New Zealand's South Island: Our Perfect Road Trip Itinerary
If you're planning your first trip to New Zealand's South Island, one of the biggest questions you'll face is how to fit everything into just one week. With so many incredible places to visit—from the adventure capital of Queenstown to the turquoise lakes surrounding Aoraki / Mount Cook—it can feel impossible to narrow down an itinerary.
After spending a week exploring the South Island by rental car, we found an itinerary that gave us the perfect mix of adventure, incredible scenery, great food, and unforgettable experiences without feeling like we were constantly packing up and moving hotels.

Our 1-Week South Island Itinerary
Rather than changing hotels every night, we chose to split our trip between two home bases:
3 nights in Queenstown
3 nights in Lake Tekapo
This allowed us to experience two completely different sides of the South Island while keeping driving time manageable.
We rented a car instead of a camper van because it was our first visit to New Zealand. Looking back, it was the right choice for us. During the week we drove nearly 1,000 miles and spent about $200 USD on fuel.
Queenstown: Adventure Meets Great Food
Queenstown is often called the adventure capital of New Zealand, and it's easy to see why.
We stayed in a cozy Airbnb just steps from the Shotover Gorge Trail, which turned out to be one of our favorite hikes. The trail offers turquoise water, suspension bridges, dramatic canyon views, tunnels, and even the chance to watch the famous Shotover Jet boats race through the gorge below.

Michelin-starred lunch at Amisfield Restaurant & Cellar Door
With more than 700 wineries, New Zealand may be better known for Sauvignon Blanc, but our lunch at Amisfield became one of the culinary highlights of the trip. The tasting menu featured creative presentations ranging from butter shaped like river rocks to venison prepared tableside over Japanese charcoal and deer milk ice cream served in the shape of an antler.
Day Trips from Queenstown
Originally, we had planned to take a scenic helicopter tour over Milford Sound, but like many visitors discover, New Zealand's mountain weather can change quickly. Our flight was cancelled twice.
Instead, we made the drive over the spectacular Crown Range Road to Wanaka.
The drive alone was worth the trip, with mountain scenery that reminded us of the Scottish Highlands.

If you're visiting near the end of summer, don't worry—we still found plenty of lavender in bloom and highly recommend trying the lavender honey ice cream.
Lake Tekapo: The Perfect Base for Mount Cook
For the second half of our trip, we moved to Lake Tekapo.
Although the town itself is small, it makes an excellent base for exploring Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park while also giving visitors the opportunity to experience one of the world's premier stargazing destinations.
Our Airbnb overlooked the lake and was within walking distance of town, making it easy to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere after busy days of sightseeing.
One thing we didn't know before visiting was that the Dark Sky Project at Mount John Observatory offers guided stargazing experiences using powerful telescopes. It's definitely something we'll add to our itinerary next time.
Visiting Mount Cook National Park
The highlight of any visit to Lake Tekapo is spending time in Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park.
We hiked the famous Hooker Valley Track, one of New Zealand's most popular day hikes. If you're driving there, don't be intimidated by the long lines of cars parked along the road. Continue to the paid parking lot if possible—it costs only a few dollars per hour and saves a long walk to the trailhead.
Nearby, the Kea Point Track provides excellent views of Mueller Glacier and is another worthwhile short hike.
Unfortunately, low clouds hid Mount Cook for most of the day.
Or so we thought.
The Experience We Still Can't Stop Talking About
As we drove back toward Lake Tekapo, the clouds finally began to lift, revealing Aoraki / Mount Cook in all its glory.
Then we received a phone call.
Our scenic flight company, Air Safaris, asked if we'd like to move our flight up by a day because weather conditions had become perfect.
It ended up becoming the highlight of our entire South Island adventure.
Flying above glaciers, jagged alpine peaks, and New Zealand's highest mountain gave us a perspective that simply isn't possible from the ground.
At $285 USD per person, it wasn't inexpensive—but it was absolutely worth it.
If we could recommend just one splurge for your South Island itinerary, this would be it.
Tips We Wish We Knew Before Visiting
Rent a car if you want maximum flexibility.
Stay in two home bases instead of changing hotels every night.
Book scenic flights early, but expect weather delays.
Cook a few meals if you're staying in an Airbnb to save money.
Don't miss the fresh salmon at the Lake Pukaki Visitor Centre.
Visit Lake Tekapo for both Mount Cook and the Dark Sky Reserve.
Continue driving to the Hooker Valley paid parking lot before settling for roadside parking.
Final Thoughts
If you only have one week to explore New Zealand's South Island, we'd happily follow this exact itinerary again.
Between Queenstown's adventure scene, Wanaka's scenic beauty, Lake Tekapo's peaceful atmosphere, and the unforgettable flight over Aoraki / Mount Cook, this trip exceeded every expectation we had.
