New Zealand North Island Adventure: Our One-Week Road Trip Itinerary
When most people think of New Zealand, they immediately picture the dramatic mountains and fjords of the South Island. While those landscapes are incredible, the North Island completely surprised us.
From award-winning wineries and stunning coastal scenery on Waiheke Island to glow worm kayaking, Māori culture, geothermal wonders, and thrilling whitewater rafting near Rotorua, we found more than enough adventure to fill an entire week.
If you're planning a trip to New Zealand, don't make the mistake of treating the North Island as just a stopover before heading south.
Here's exactly how we spent one week exploring New Zealand's North Island.

Stop 1: Waiheke Island
After a long international flight, we wanted an easy and relaxing first stop before beginning our New Zealand road trip.
Located just a 35-minute ferry ride from Auckland, Waiheke Island was the perfect place to slow down, recover from jet lag, and ease into Kiwi life.
Most visitors come for a day trip, but we highly recommend spending at least two nights.
Where We Stayed
We rented a cliffside Airbnb overlooking the water. Waking up to panoramic ocean views made it immediately clear why Waiheke is one of New Zealand's most popular escapes.
Our Favorite Things To Do
Visit Batch Winery & Mudbrick Vineyard
These were our two favorite wineries on the island.
Batch Winery offers incredible views across the island along with excellent wine flights and food.
Mudbrick combines beautiful gardens, stunning scenery, and some of the best dining experiences on Waiheke.
Even if you're not a wine enthusiast, the views alone make both stops worthwhile.
Explore The Heke
The Heke became one of our favorite discoveries on the island.
Part brewery, part distillery, and part entertainment venue, it's a great place to spend an afternoon enjoying local beer, spirits, and great food.
Sample Local Olive Oils
New Zealand's olive oil scene doesn't get nearly enough attention. We enjoyed tasting locally produced oils while learning about Waiheke's Mediterranean-style growing conditions.
Stop 2: Rotorua & Atiamuri
After picking up our rental car, we drove approximately 2.5 hours south toward Rotorua.
Rather than staying directly in town, we booked an off-grid cabin near Atiamuri surrounded by farmland and rolling countryside.
It became one of our favorite stays in New Zealand.
Whitewater Rafting on the Kaituna River
If you only do one adventure activity on the North Island, make it this.
The Kaituna River features the world's highest commercially rafted waterfall, and the entire experience was an adrenaline rush from start to finish.
The combination of beautiful scenery and exciting rapids made this one of the highlights of our trip.
Glow Worm Kayaking
This was one of the most unique experiences we've ever had.
After sunset, we paddled across a quiet lake before entering hidden glow worm caves illuminated by thousands of tiny lights overhead.
Unlike the more famous Waitomo Caves, this experience felt incredibly intimate and adventurous.
Māori Cultural Experience
One of the best ways to understand New Zealand is through Māori culture.
We participated in an evening cultural experience that included traditional storytelling, performances, a haka, and a delicious hāngi meal.
Beyond being entertaining, it provided valuable insight into the history and traditions that continue to shape modern New Zealand.
Day Trips from Rotorua
Hobbiton Movie Set
Whether you're a Lord of the Rings fan or not, Hobbiton exceeded our expectations.
The attention to detail is remarkable, and the guides do an excellent job sharing behind-the-scenes stories from the films.
The Green Dragon Inn alone is worth the visit.
Zealong Tea Estate
Located near Hamilton, Zealong is New Zealand's only commercial tea plantation and offers a surprisingly unique experience.
The grounds are beautiful, the tea is excellent, and afternoon tea provides a relaxing change of pace from the adventure activities elsewhere on the island.
Stop 3: Auckland
We spent our final days back in Auckland before flying to the South Island.
Wētā Workshop Unleashed
This attraction quickly became one of our favorite surprises.
Created by the legendary special effects team behind films like Lord of the Rings, Avatar, and countless other productions, this interactive experience provides a fascinating look at movie magic and practical effects.
Duck Island Ice Cream
If you're visiting Auckland, make time for Duck Island.
The flavors are creative, uniquely New Zealand, and absolutely delicious.
Sometimes the simplest travel memories end up being the ones you remember most.
Food Tip: Shop Like a Local
One thing that surprised us was the quality of New Zealand grocery stores.
The produce, meat, dairy products, and prepared foods were fantastic, often at prices far lower than eating out.
If you're traveling on a budget—or simply enjoy trying local foods—don't overlook the grocery stores.
We also recommend grabbing a traditional New Zealand meat pie from a local bakery at least once during your trip. They're inexpensive, delicious, and a true Kiwi staple.
Driving in New Zealand
Many travelers worry about driving on the left side of the road, but we found New Zealand surprisingly easy to navigate.
A few tips:
Download offline Google Maps before arriving.
Expect many two-lane roads outside major cities.
Allow extra time for scenic stops.
Be prepared for winding roads.
Don't rush—the journey is often as beautiful as the destination.
Final Thoughts
The North Island surprised us in the best possible way.
Between the incredible scenery, welcoming Kiwi culture, outdoor adventures, wineries, and unique experiences, we easily could have spent more than a week exploring.
If you're planning a New Zealand trip, don't rush through the North Island on your way to Queenstown. Give it the time it deserves.
You might discover, like we did, that some of your favorite memories happen north of Cook Strait.
